Why did Iranian MPs took embarrassing selfies with Federica Mogherini

Members of the Iranian parliament are facing a strong criticism for their ‘selfie rage’ with EU’s top diplomat, Federica Mogherini.

She visited Iran for President Hassan Rouhani’s inauguration.

Ms Mogherini found herself in a centre of attention when in Parliament. Many MPs surrounded Ms Mogherini trying to take selfies with her.

The behavior of Iranian MPs was called by social media users as simply ‘strange’ and ‘humiliating’.

MP Alireza Salimi even called the selfie-rage in the Iranian Parliament a ‘self-surrender to the West’. Others ridiculed the men who were crowding Ms Mogherini.

Iran is still facing suctions from the European Union for its nuclear program.

The cultural adviser to the president Hesam Ashena said: ‘This is a cultural rather than a political problem. Every one of those esteemed MPs in that selfie should be interviewed seriously.’

And another Iranian politician Sadegh Kharrazi – an adviser to reformist former President Mohammad Khatami- suggested that all Iranian MPs undergo ‘a training course on codes of conduct and universal moral values’.

Some tweeted sarcastically about Mogherini as well

She must take a position on Human Right (in Iran)

Her attendance at Hassan Rouhani’s ceremony is a disgrace to democracy
