Dubai is mostly famous for its posh cars, splendid hotels and glamorous architecture.
However now it became also home to the very first female barber.
Samantha Lloyd, 29, from Aberdare, has broken a generations’ ban on female barbers in the United Arab Emirates and is now woking in a in the exclusive Dubai Design District.
She had to obtain a special permission from the Emirati authorities permitting her to cut and style men’s hair.
At home in the UK she won several awards in Hairdresser’s Federation Championships.
‘Most of the top barbers are in London and I love following what they are doing,’ she told Wales Online. ‘You have to stand out and hopefully this will be a good step for me being the first female barber.’

She then decided to pursue a bigger challenge and moved to Dubai with her Australian partner.
‘When I applied for the job I didn’t think I would get it because when I googled it I saw that there were no female barbers.’
However Chaps & Co saloon, where she now works, were eager to challenge the tradition.
‘I had a short interview and they told me it would be tough because I would be the first female barber.’,- she adds.
Reflecting on her experience in the UAE, she says: ‘Being a first female barber it is been challenging to get people on my side’.
